T H I R T E E N // T H I R T Y : How I viewed myself

my first trial at modeling. age thirteen.

there are very few pictures of me as a thirteen year old.

when i got the proofs back from the shoot seen above, the whole time i kept picking out what was wrong with me. i dodged the camera whenever i could.  if i happened to be in a picture, i rarely smiled or i covered most of my face. comparison was a poison, deep in my veins. something felt wrong about me. i even avoided mirrors and windows for the sake of not seeing myself.

i wrote a lot of poems, more so when i turned thirteen. as i read over a few of them, i realized something inside of me had died, or rather i had repressed my true self. i remember looking in the mirror one day and actually staring at myself, but the person that i saw in the mirror did not feel like me. i later wrote the following poem:

fraternal twin

who is this stranger i
see in the mirror staring back at me?
it is me, plain and
nothing to be vain about,
but this person standing in another world
looks back at me with vanity.
we are one, but
she has confidence written on her face. her body
shows strength and grace. mystery and beauty
gleam in her eyes.
i ask myself, "why is it so hard
for others to see my reflection,
and for me to see it too?"

i think i subconsciously asked myself that question over the next sixteen years. during my twenty-ninth year i finally came to terms that i had been living fractured. i was me, just never me all at once. it was a daily struggle to see myself as the things i saw in my reflection, as God had always seen me, but i am happier because of it. as i look forward to turning thirty this week, i am glad that i can walk into a new decade finally as one person.

wholeness never tasted better.

B O D Y

40.5. 34. 26. 38.
shoulders. bust. waist. hips.
just shy of a perfect hour glass,  but my shoulders leave my tops draping shapelessly off them like they were on a hanger. (now there is an understanding of why i abhor shoulder pads) more fitted tops draw more attention to them and i end up looking like an inverted triangle. most of the time i do not notice it, but when i opt for skinny jeans and a baggy top, it becomes apparent that i have cadillac shoulders, and from behind i give off the appearance that i am a slender man.

no bueno.

but i like my loose fitted items. i also don't like looking like a boy. *le sigh*. more v-necks says one. full skirts says another. am i a fruit or a keeper of time or a pythagorean equation? they make it so complicated, and their suggestions of styles to wear do not suit my tastes.

mitigate the breadth of my shoulders (or look less like a boy from behind).
elongate my torso.

how can i make this happen in a state of simplicity and still keep my sweaters and sweatshirts?

oversized sweater that extends past my hips, but is slimming at the waist

raglan. duh. why didn't i think of this sooner?
thin sweaters where the shoulder line extends past my shoulders
ok. i can breathe. change doesn't look too bad now.

INSPIRATION | Resort Wear

This Friday, I will be doing a shoot for Marriott's Harbor and was asked to bring "resort wear" attire. I have lived in the the resort capitol of the United States for more than a decade now, I still have no idea what this means. I mean I am usually in skinny jeans, boots and a tee whenever I go on vacation morning, noon, or night, so I never pay that close attention to what I am wearing. I know what Florida's idea of resort wear entails: shorts, flops, and usually some tropical motif to validate that you live in Florida. I was told I would get extra brownie points if I had a caftan.

Google is my friend.

I researched the heck out of this style of clothing and had NO idea that there is actually a niche for Resort Wear (the season in between winter and spring fashion lines). Apparently designers needed something to fill their already busy schedules and came up with this genre of clothing. At any rate, I found some looks more up my alley, with designers like Chloe and Stella McCartney relieving a tomgirl like me from having to succumb to commercialized Jimmy Buffet fashion.

BEHIND THE DESK | Jade and Camel

I must admit, I have been bumming it at work...the tomboy in me totally won over my girl side. It didn't help that I was assisting in a play and had to wear black to all rehearsals and shows, so creativity took a back seat for realz. But I am back. And you're welcome.

ACCESSORIES | Tigress Necklace

Another beaut from Italy's Zara: This wonderful neck piece. My sister was on the hunt to find me Kenzo head gear (hey she found a real Prada bag at an Italian church rummage sale) the Kenzo motif is an open mouthed tiger. This was no Kenzo, but she knew I would wear this...A LOT! And they go nicely with the tribal print leggings she got for me too!

BEHIND THE DESK | One little indian

I really love this sweater from Mango. The geometric pattern around the collar puts a simple, modern twist on the native American theme that is recirculating this season. Paired with a mini skirt and some boots and a feathered pendant necklace. Good to go!

OOTD | Color blocking

I know this trend was in and out before I could blink, but I still love the idea of colliding bright colors that just invite spring and summer in.

FASHION FRIDAYS | 100th Post!

Wow I can't believe I have had so much to say in the last six months! 100 posts already? I don't believe it, but its true. So should I talk about? Hmm. Well, I think maybe I should explain a bit what is a tomgirl since it graces your faces in the title bar. Two years ago....actually lets go back even further. Almost four years ago, I turned 25 and realized the clothes I had really didn't represent me as a continually transforming human being. It was extremely hard finding clothes that I liked because I had pretty much defined myself as a tomboy for most of my life, but I  desperately wanted to feel like a woman, just without all the frills. Everything in the store that was targeted to my age bracket was geared toward either the working woman or the party polyester blend girl. I even (I kid you not) submitted a video to What Not to Wear because I was absolutely frustrated with the way that I dressed. I looked like a boy with makeup on.

Then about three years ago Janelle Monae got really popular with her iconic updo and feminine tuxedo and shortly there after women's fashion went back to the androgynous phase, only this time femme touches were added. Not only that but blogs like Tomboy Style hit my radar (so thankful for it) and redefined what a tomboy was. It wasn't just about playing with the boys in boy's clothes, but about the liberty of being a woman beyond social and cultural constraints.

I know, pretty heavy for such a simple lifestyle.

So with that in mind, I thought long and hard about myself. I love screaming at the top of my lungs at a basketball game, running faster than the boys, getting dirty, seeing if I have the loudest burp, and being a kid when moments allow it. But I also love feeling pretty, twirling around in a circle till my skirt fans out, crossing my legs at the ankles, and turning heads as I saunter into a room. And I want to do it with out making a fuss every day. I want to stick it to the man like Katherine Hepburn, but do it with the grace of Kelly, and the appeal of Rita Hayworth. Ohhh, so I am a vintage dame as well.

So tomgirl? Well, to me its the mixture of the simplicity but wildness of a tomboy and the refinement and elegance of a woman. Shirt pants shoes. Not boring, just not over accessorized. I have been practicing more with makeup as I have gone most of my life without it on a regular basis. Simple statement pieces that stand out just enough to where you hear its sultry whisper beckoning you to come closer.

Its been a long endearing process of perfecting my style and I am no where near it, but I am happy with the results so far. I want to make sure I am always evolving in this current world, but never forgetting what the past has contributed.

That all being said, I want to have a giveaway in February. 14 days of TOMGIRL love. I haven't figured out what I am giving away yet, but it will definitely be something that I have seen most of my readers drool over (yes I do read your blogs even if I don't comment all the time :) ) So keep reading on! February will be here sooner than later and you don't want to miss what I have for you!

OOTD | All things Primark

My friend Chelsea's birthday is tonight, and I know for the most part people are always casually chic, so what better way to sport this than with my new Euro duds? Everything save the jewelry I got from Primark.
