C L A S S I C PENCIL SKIRT

it should be snug over your hips so that it comes in under your butt, but not so tight that it gathers on your front side.

T H I R T E E N // T T H I R T Y

this month went by so fast! normally, i take it in slowly and enjoy my birthday month; but between packing and moving, my biggest thrill was being able to see my bedroom floor. work has kept me extremely busy (both of them plus a few freelance projects) so you can guess why i haven't been updating at all in almost a month.

but by the title you can probably guess that i have been anticipating my 30th birthday. i decided to take this week in slow mo leading up to my birthday and reflect on different things that i have learned, things i have accomplished before 30, even take a look at things i wrote when i was 13 to see what my perspective was like (it is full of angst-y humor).

hopefully, this will be of some help to all those twenty-somethings out there who are trying to cram life into ten years from 18-28 because they feel as though life after 29 doesn't exist if you don't have a totem pole of musts chiseled into it.

S C H U H E

went dress shoe shopping, once upon a time.

came to a sad conclusion that i can no longer sport my nine west favs which have always been a comfort to my soles. they were my first pair of heels and my bodacious calves thank them. now, i find more heels to be uncomfortable due to last years basketball injury, so boots, sneakers, and anything else that is flat takes precedence. but now i have a new job. they want me to get all dressed up and such, and said shoes will not do anymore. but i hast to has 'em.

enter steve madden

i must say that i never cared for steve madden style of shoe, but in recent years i have been impressed with the face lift and he has done me a favor in  combining what i love and what i have to wear into a comfortable compromise. i think i just found my "the one".

S P O R T

four days ago, i got to witness my former college win the national championship in football. a triumph only accomplished two other times within the last twenty years. they said we couldn't do it despite our perfect 13-0 season. four days ago we proved them wrong.

i screamed until i grew nauseous when we scored a 100-yd touchdown off a punt return with 5 minutes remaining in the game. and when we scored the winning touchdown with less than a minute to play, i went crazy. i cried. i was dizzy. i was buzzed. i even bought a not-worth-a-buck-fifty local newspaper just to have the article about my team plastered on the front.

to be honest, when i was younger, i hated football. but my dad liked to watch it and i liked spending time with him, so i started asking him what everything was. suddenly, i knew what a first down was, and now i could cheer with everyone else with purpose. the game was no longer dull. even golf became nail biting. golf.

i know this means squat to most of my readers. sports on a girl's blog is not too common and i will spare you the play by play. i'll even throw you a bone and say i wore a grey monochromatic look with a boucle coat, heels and a splash of garnet and gold in my scarf to show off my team spirit. but this is me and what i enjoy and it should not make this a less feminine post.

go noles!

B O D Y

40.5. 34. 26. 38.
shoulders. bust. waist. hips.
just shy of a perfect hour glass,  but my shoulders leave my tops draping shapelessly off them like they were on a hanger. (now there is an understanding of why i abhor shoulder pads) more fitted tops draw more attention to them and i end up looking like an inverted triangle. most of the time i do not notice it, but when i opt for skinny jeans and a baggy top, it becomes apparent that i have cadillac shoulders, and from behind i give off the appearance that i am a slender man.

no bueno.

but i like my loose fitted items. i also don't like looking like a boy. *le sigh*. more v-necks says one. full skirts says another. am i a fruit or a keeper of time or a pythagorean equation? they make it so complicated, and their suggestions of styles to wear do not suit my tastes.

mitigate the breadth of my shoulders (or look less like a boy from behind).
elongate my torso.

how can i make this happen in a state of simplicity and still keep my sweaters and sweatshirts?

oversized sweater that extends past my hips, but is slimming at the waist

raglan. duh. why didn't i think of this sooner?
thin sweaters where the shoulder line extends past my shoulders
ok. i can breathe. change doesn't look too bad now.

BOOK INSPIRED LOOKS | The Great Gatsby::Jordan

The Great Gatsby | Jordan

Although I didn't care so much for the new version of Gatsby (I haven't seen the older versions but I heard they are no better) I couldn't help but drool over Jordan Baker's wardrobe. She was my one consolation to enduring to the end. Jordan was a golfer and from the book a not so decent golfer, but an athlete non-the-less. Florida winters are normally northern states' fall, and normally you would see people walking around with their favorite college sweatshirt, shorts/pants and flip-flops. Never quite understood the concept, but here's something way more sophisticated if you must indeed wear sandals in the winter Floridians. A thin bomber or varsity jacket with a nice boyfriend coat draped over it and underneath it all some high waisted pants and mid-drift top to make you less toasty.

STYLE CRUSH | Zoe Saldana

My first celebrity style crush. Normally, I try to search for the unknown and known blogsters of the fashion realm, but come on--its Zoe Saldana. On the red, her evening wear is almost always sporting a plummeting necklines, exposed shoulders, geometric cut outs, or a mini to show off her ballerina legs that go on "fuh days".

Off the carpet, and into the streets of every day wear and small social events, her simplicity in color and pattern palette is makes her the most striking in my opinion. There is the straight forward approach about her style, that says "I like comfort, but I don't have to be a slob about it." She airs on the side of blacks and greys and plays casually with her accessories. Not a lot of fuss. Zoe. Live long and prosper.

OOTD | White as Snow

Green was the apparent color of choice yesterday. Of course since I sport green all year long, I had to go against the grain and wear shades of white.

The Tomgirl Series | The Face of Spring

Spring fashion always seems to mimic (so literally) the flowers coming into bloom, color coming back and sunshine. Looking like an Easter egg was fine and dandy when I was eight, but at 28 I should probably try dressing my age, even if I am still that carefree 8 year old. It seems like the fashion world got the memo is stepping away from traditional avenues of Spring wear. Abstract prints and strong lines mixed with airy colors and material make for a much more grownup yet playful new wardrobe. Here's to Spring.

LIFE OF A TOMGIRL | Girl we scoutin'

Sorry I was MIA for the last two days. If you have been following me on instagram, you would have seen my collages throughout the day of my photo/camping trip I took with two friends of mine. Chris asked if I wanted to go take pictures of an abandoned phosphorus factory. I said sure. Frankie added "Lets go camping too." The problem with camping with guys is surpisingly not having to share a tent; its their lack of preparedness for said adventures. Apparently, this is the hipster thing to do, but that's how McCandles wound up dead in Alaska.

I always get ragged on for "overthinking" and being cautious, but the jokes get tossed to the side when they are hungry and all they brought were milk duds, orange juice, and dried apricots. I admire them for their carefree spirit, being able to breath in toxic remnants of phosphorous, or walk through overgrown bushes without the thought of a reptile living there (we are in everglade country for goodness sakes). At any rate it was nice to live on the edge as long as I was harnessed to an oak tree and I enjoyed the time with my boys and I would do it all again.

WINTER STYLE | Sweaters

Florida suddenly got a blast of cold, so I have been sporting sweaters and sweatshirts the last few days. Should be back in the 70s tomorrow, but for now I must dress for the 40 degrees outside.

OOTD | Jones and Kryptonite

Tomorrow I am helping my friend out with his portfolio and I am doing headshots, which means I had the tedious task of washing and straightening my hair the night before. Of course it would rain, but in an effort to protect all my hard work (4hrs total) I knew I was going to have to do a hat. The rest of the outfit followed suit.
