T H I R T E E N // THIRTY : Wear Sunscreen

so this song (or speech rather) called everybody's free to wear sunscreen began to circulate in the summer of ninety-seven, just a few short months after i turned thirteen. as i thought about what words of wisdom i would grant future going on thirties, this song popped into my mind and i looked up the words for it, and found it to almost sum up everything that i wanted to say. below i have pulled some quotes out from the song that i thought were good.


If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.
The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.
I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth.
Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded.
But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.
You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future.
Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts.
Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy.
Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind.
The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life.
The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives.
Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Enjoy your body.
It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance. 

Get to know your parents. 
You never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings. 
They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go,
but with a precious few you should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, 
because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

 Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths:
Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old.
And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you.
Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

T H I R T E E N // T H I R T Y : How I viewed my future

acording to allwomenstalk.com i should have accomplished these thirty things before my third decade of living:

travel to paris. dream job. volunteer for a cause. visit all 50 states (hahaha...are you serious?). big road trip. travel solo. get a passport. fall in love. buy your first home. have a baby. visit nyc on nye. the list goes on. and there are more like this that could easily make you feel like you have yet to accomplish anything in your life.

so i decided to create my own list of things i have accomplished and after i did it my collage of experience is far more interesting than i mapped out for myself when i was thirteen.

thirteen.
graduate from college in two and a half years.
become a family lawyer.
get married by twenty-two.
have two kids by twenty-six.
own a home by twenty-eight.

thirty.
graduated from two colleges.
became a graphic designer.
apart of several grassroots social justice movements.
road tripped from florida to missouri, alone.
been to south america once.
been to central america four times.
europe three times in my life.
been to every state on the east coast, a few in the midwest, and two on the west coast.
managed my first magazine and fashion show.
started my own business.
published my first book by twenty-two.
have learned a new language.
have been in two dance performances, small and large scale.
and the best part, i haven't even lived yet.

so here is my challenge. try to remember when you were young and what your life goals were. write them all down. then write down all that you have accomplished. don't put down what you haven't or what failed. you may find that God's winding path is a lot more interesting than your straight forward plan.

T H I R T E E N // T T H I R T Y

this month went by so fast! normally, i take it in slowly and enjoy my birthday month; but between packing and moving, my biggest thrill was being able to see my bedroom floor. work has kept me extremely busy (both of them plus a few freelance projects) so you can guess why i haven't been updating at all in almost a month.

but by the title you can probably guess that i have been anticipating my 30th birthday. i decided to take this week in slow mo leading up to my birthday and reflect on different things that i have learned, things i have accomplished before 30, even take a look at things i wrote when i was 13 to see what my perspective was like (it is full of angst-y humor).

hopefully, this will be of some help to all those twenty-somethings out there who are trying to cram life into ten years from 18-28 because they feel as though life after 29 doesn't exist if you don't have a totem pole of musts chiseled into it.

T A M P A T E A T I M E

oxford exchange.

was this really tampa? i gave a tiger woods fist pump as the hostess put us by the fountain in the sunlit conservatory room. vine covered walls and a large glass paneled sunroof filled us with glee and made us trigger happy with our phones.

redemption was in order from my previous night of a bad starbucks cappuccino (how are they still in business), so i started off with one, paired with gargantuan strawberry scones.

moment of silence for the scones, cream, and berry jam.

finished off with a golden monkey latte. rich and malty. grammed the place and got an instasuggestion to check out edison food and drink lab from @kristineyoungin. i have seen where she goes, so when she told me, i was game. great choice. saturdays should always feel like this.

so glad and full.

T A K E M E O U T

sixty balls. five dollars. one girl and her bat.

i haven't been to a batting cage since i was thirteen. it did not take long for the bat and i to become comrades. its amazing what the muscles remember. the manager said i had a solid form and a good swing. dad had a hand in that. my sister stated that all the silly guys in my life had a hand in that. i'll admit, this is a great stress reliever, even if i will feel this in the morning.


my sister showed off her ambidextrous skills hitting straight toward centerfield, homeruns at that. symmetric to the bone. we tried out baseballs our last round. it turns out i hit smaller objects better than big objects.

we ate a champions' meal at hubbly bubbly, a new greek hub in college park. simple menu. grrrrreat baklava. the owner, georgie, i can't even. so adorable.

LA LA LA LOVE

had a wonderful valentines.
started the night off with 90s jams and famous couples. then valentines cards were made and handed out at random.i was told it was the highlight of most people's night.
food. champagne.
full moon. full hearts.
all while dancing like the fools that we are for allowing this day to be discarded because we hate to be alone. not tonight, friend. tonight love is all around.

R E V I S I O N

i had a conversation with a friend several nights ago, while my car ran for hours in her driveway. the journey of becoming a woman. being a woman, well i am not sure what that looks like, but i do not think it is all frills and dolls.

i want to be comfortable being woman. the natural flirtation. the strength in my form and not just my words. being okay with being pretty. i have shunned this part of myself for so long, and i am embarrassed to draw attention to myself.

i have come a long way from baggy clothes. from hiding. from invisibility. but i still haven't quite stepped out, all eyes on me. unnerving. but i can merge the two. i can be the woman in a sports sweatshirt and a pair of heels.

so this is the new chapter of my blog. the new chapter of me. on becoming.

WHERE HAVE I BEEN?!

Wowzas. I have been away for an incredibly long time. What have I been doing with myself and why haven't there been any recent fashion photos? Well for the last month and a half I have been overseeing other photo shoots and working on the upcoming fashion show that I told you all I wanted to accomplish this year. Then a week ago, my "tom" got the better of me and I sprained my ankle playing basketball. I won, so that it is all that matters. I got dubbed "Crutchy" (for any Newsies fans out there) by my sister and I have been hobbling around ever since then.

I did happen to squeeze in a photo shoot with OPP this past Wednesday, while balancing most of my weight to my good foot, so as soon as I get those pictures I will post them for sure! But I do have a lot of post coming up this week because I have been pinteresting like crazy trying to get inspired for the summer, which for Florida has been here since January. Anyway, stay up to date on my life via my INSTAGRAM, swollen foot, wild things, and all.

LIFE | UNCOVERED photo shoot Part 1

Moving. Work. Watching Fish. UNCOVERED. Or should that be more prioritized as UNCOVERED. Work. Moving. Watching fish. ? The last month  and a half I have been scrambling to find models, locations, and backers for my project UNCOVERED. Tuesday stylists The Originative finished their shoot on the book entitled Divergent. I showed up right as they were getting their first model out in front of the camera, and literally my heart skipped a beat. This is happening, flashes through my mind. I feel the energy in the room. Paul and Paulina are exuding enthusiasm. It is the coolest thing to witness someone completely in love with fashion. Not a snob that thinks they know it all. But someone who is genuinely thrilled about clothes taking form on someone's body. Its infectious.

This is not a routine for them. This is a new endeavor, only every day. Words cannot express how elated I was to see them in their element. They went beyond my expectations and I am super excited to see what they intend to reveal at the show in November!

LIFE | Moving

3 weeks and counting.

Its all bitter sweet. It will be the first time that my sister and I will be living in the same city, but not under the same roof. Out of the 28 years that I have known her, only 6 of those years involved us living separate.  That's cray. Real cray.

A week ago I asked around and within 2 hrs I had 4 responses. Today, I got the keys. God is good.

There's no closet, so there will be some downsizing. I bought 24 hangers, and had to choose which clothes would make it to my new makeshift closet. Everything will be donated.

My new room will have plenty of sunlight and plenty of wall space, so it's time to invest in a full length mirror for better OOTD pictures!

I have received a Liebster Award! I was nominated by Beauty O'holic Thanks, Meredith! Did not quite know what it was until recently, but basically its an award that helps me and others check new bloggers out there in blogville that they haven't heard of before.     LIFE | Happy Thoughts

    My birthday this year was amazing. My parents surprised me. I cried. We dressed up. Had dinner in Neverland with friends. I enjoyed my weekend of lovely happy thoughts. I think I could fly.

    LIFE | Birthday Outfit Ideas

    One of my favorite childhood movies is HOOK, the continuing story of Peter Pan. Tomorrow I will be 29. I am excited and scared at the same time because I feel like I have been in my twenties forever, so this being my last year before I can no longer say "I'm twenty___" really zoomed me into the realization that I am getting older. That time is continually chasing after me. It is sobering. Saturday, I am having a HOOK inspired birthday party. Adult attire, but child inspired. Friends will dress up as either a lost boy, indian or a pirate. I was torn between being Peter Pan or Wendy. I am going shopping with my friend Chelsea, so I am looking for some inspiration.

    FASHION FRIDAYS | Then and Now

    My my! I can't believe I went almost a whole week with no posts! My apologies, work is kicking my badonka. Plus I have been preoccupied with creating this lookbook for you lovelies, and trying to get inspiration for my 29th birthday [insert appropriate emoji face here].  I know I can't believe it either. But all the buzz about how to celebrate it got me all nostalgic and I started looking at pictures of me from almost 14 years ago (even that sounds weird). I was a TOM-BOY for sure. No mistake indeed (which explains a lot about me not getting all the boys in the yard back then--not much has changed but at least I had an excuse then!) I thought I would show you one of the few pictures I have of myself from high school (I think I only have about 10). I was 15 in this picture, toward the end of 9th grade and I was (still am) a Lady Vols fan. My wardrobe of choice most days consisted of trackies, sports tee, addidas kicks and my collection of bucket hats. Trimmings usually involved hemp bracelets and shell necklaces (I lived anywhere from 5-25 minutes away from any beach so that was normal jewelry wear). I mostly wore it for comfort and for the fact that my 165 lbs of muscle couldn't fit into most girly clothes without looking like I was trying too hard. Anyway, enjoy this morsel of my past and thank the Lord that this phase passed....eventually :)

    LIFE OF A TOMGIRL | Girl we scoutin'



    Sorry I was MIA for the last two days. If you have been following me on instagram, you would have seen my collages throughout the day of my photo/camping trip I took with two friends of mine. Chris asked if I wanted to go take pictures of an abandoned phosphorus factory. I said sure. Frankie added "Lets go camping too." The problem with camping with guys is surpisingly not having to share a tent; its their lack of preparedness for said adventures. Apparently, this is the hipster thing to do, but that's how McCandles wound up dead in Alaska.

    I always get ragged on for "overthinking" and being cautious, but the jokes get tossed to the side when they are hungry and all they brought were milk duds, orange juice, and dried apricots. I admire them for their carefree spirit, being able to breath in toxic remnants of phosphorous, or walk through overgrown bushes without the thought of a reptile living there (we are in everglade country for goodness sakes). At any rate it was nice to live on the edge as long as I was harnessed to an oak tree and I enjoyed the time with my boys and I would do it all again.

    LIFE | So Funny Story

    Not sure how many of you follow me on instagram (@thetomgirl) but if you do, you might have caught my blunder from this weekend. I said I was heading to Boca for a wedding. Drove 3.5 hrs the night before and checked into my hotel. 15 min in I started plan my itinerary for the next day and my route from my hotel to the ceremony. The ceremony...was in Bradenton. 4 hrs away. I morphed into 4 yr old laughing and crying at the same time while doing one of those tantrum dances. I couldnt believe I made such an awful mistake! In five minutes I had my stay cancelled, a hotel booked, and my stuff back in the car. The wedding was beautiful, but I was exhausted! So yeah thats my funny story.
    $30 sweater I got a Target for 70% off at $8! And it
    matched an old purchased skirt of mine from Banana Republic.
